GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS

Silver Ring Again. The eight-year-old Silver Ring has been placed In work again after a spell of over four months and it is hoped that he will be in action again in November. No deoision has yet been reached as to whether he will be taken to Australia this season. Last spring, when Silver Ring was taken to Australia, his venture into weight-for-age events brought him £2475 in stakes.

A Smart Galloper, Maori Song’s victory in the Dunedin Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday wa9 his fourth successive win and he has demonstrated that he is a smart galloper who should continue to pay his way even though he Is getting up in the weights. It was only In June that he won his first race and he has graduated from novice to open company in quick time.

A Fine Performance. One of the finest performances at the Pakuranga meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday was the effort of Galllo, who was having his first outing for nearly a year. It was on the eve of the New’ Zealand Gup meeting last season that he went amiss and in his first start since, despite 9.11, he showed brilliant, form to just go under to Maori Song. The race should just finish off his preparation and great Interest will be taken in his next start.

Rlooarton Does Well. Of the £IO,OOO in stakes at the Grand National meeting, Riccarton stables won £4355. North Island horses £3580, and other parts of the South Island £1865.

Australian Spring Raolng. Gold Rod and Talking are equal favourites for the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap, and Mala is the favourite for the Metropolitan. Talking is favourite for the Caulfield 'Cup, with Courtoraft in the second line, while Ajax, Gene Tout, Hua, and Mala ar6 equal favourites for the Melbourne Cup.

Long Record of Service. Mr L. A. Abraham, who did not geek re-election as a member of the committee at the annual meeting of the Manawaiu Racing Club, retired with a record of 5Q years as a steward of the club. Eulogistic reference was made by the chairman, Mr C. Louisson, and Mr IT. R. Cooper, who lias been a steward for 33 years, and in acknowledging the tributes Mr Abraham mentioned that he could claim a further record—he was the only steward of the club to have raced a horse that had not won a race. Mr Abraham’s place on the committee has been taken by his son, Mr L. Martyn Abraham.

An Australian Gibe. An Australian sportsman who attended the Wellington winter meeting and the Grand National meeting expressed annoyance at what he termed the lack of consideration shown towards horses and riders by sending them into the birdcage and to the post too long before the start of a race. His remarks particularly applied to Trentham, where the weather was much more wintry than at Riccarton. He said that in New' Zealand the clubs studied the totalisator rather than horses and riders.

Jookey In Australia. The Hawera obstacle Jockey, J. Grindlay. is now' in Melbourne, where he will ride the Jumpers in J. Fryer's team, and if sufficient Inducement is forthcoming, will remain in Australia.

A Big Profit. As a result ‘of their operation last season, the Victoria Racing Club came well out of the business, a profit, of £10,4*21 being disclosed by the’ balance sheet.

For Fifth Time. For the fifth successive season Heroic has headed the list, of successful sires*in Australia. He is now a pensioner on his owner’s (Mr C. B. Fellow) estate, Woodlands, near Melbourne, having become useless for stud duties. He has had a great career, both on the racing trail and at the stud, ns his stake earnings amounted to £38,062 10s, winning 21 races. His record as a sire is a wonderful performance, his stock to date having won £166,710.

A Big Double. Quite recently in Melbourne an admirer of the New Zealand-bred Mala coupled him with Silver Rose for the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups to the extent of a £IO,OOO win. Silver Rose is speedy, as she demonstrated last autumn, when she secured second place in the A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap.

Getting In Early. owners 111 Australia evidently get ill early In engaging Jockeys for their representatives, as the owners of Ajax, lavourile for Ihe Australian Jockey CUib Derby, has engaged the one-time New Zealand Jockey, m. McCarten, to ride the colt in both the A.J.C. and Y.R.C. Derbies. Owing to his weight, McCartcn will not be able to take the seat on Ajax in the Melbourne Cup, in which lie has been allotted 7.8.

Royal Llmond. Reports from the soulh slate that Mr A. Syine lias decided lo relire Royal Limond, and will give him away lo li« used as a hack.

H. E. Russell’s Visit.

The Woodville owner-trainer, H. E. I Russell, returned to Wellington from Sydney last week, bringing back with him the two-year-old Sports Goat, by Pink Coat from Jarretiere, w'ho recently met with an injury, and is to be spelled till next season. Russell, how'ever, made only a llying visit, as he is to be returned to Sydney this week. Worth Winning. Santa Anita is not to have a monopoly of 100,000 dollar races in America. The Eastern Racing Association (Massachusetts) has announced that next yPar the Massachusetts Handicap (now 50,000 dollars) will carry that amount. A new track in Florida is also to have a handicap of 100,000 dollars. A Good Gift. Diplomat (Stratford —Honor Bright), who Is rated the best three-year-old sprinter in England, is owned by Mr Malcolm MoAlpine, who is only 10 years of age. Diplomat was bought as a yearling for 2400gns, by Sid Malcolm McAlpine, who presented him to his son. Up to the close of the Asoot meeting Diplomat had won eight of the 12 races In which he had started, and earned £B9l3—a useful present.
