LECTURE SERIES ENDS.
SUPPORT FOR SYSTEM. QUESTION OF ATTENDANCES. The opinion that it was unfair to compare Hamilton and Whangarei in the matter of the attendances at the university extension lectures held in these centres this winter was expressed by Mr W. A. Curteis at the conclusion of tlie final lecture of tne series for the season given in Hamilton last evening. Contending that it would have been more logical to compare attendances at Whangarei with those in anothDr centre where there was a similar absence of counter-attractions, Mr Cu"teis said that he considered the results of the season just closed to be quite satisfactory. The Hamilton Borough Council committee which had arranged for the lectures had not anticipated large attendances for the first season. ‘‘We have managed to do the spadework,” he said, “and I do not think we should allow the extension lecture system to lapse.” Membership subscriptions had not come forward as freely as they might, and the council would have to find a proportionately larger amount of tho expenses, but the council would meet the deficiency. In acknowledging a vote of thanks, the lecturer for the evening, Mr W. T. G. Alrey, said that he had not hea”d any suggestion of the scheme lapsing. At his first lecture he had been a little disappointed at the small audience, but at the others there had been an encouraging attendance. The thanks of the meeting lo the Auckland University College for supplying the lecturers, and to the Ilamillon Borough Council for making the j lectures financially possible, was ex- | pressed by Die chairman, Mr I). Croall.
