WATER FOR FARMS.

BUPPLY MAY TERMINATE. POSITION AT CAMBRIDGE. (Special to Timet.) CAMBRIDGE. Saturday. After enjoying the benefits of an efficient supply of water from the reservoirs that ‘supplied the town for some years It seems likely that many farmers In the Maungatautarl district will be suddenly severed from the Cambridge water scheme. A position lias arisen, following negotiations which have extended x>ver soma months, which has resulted In tho Cambridge Borough Council proposing, to alter its water supply scheme considerably. The main feature of the scheme is likely to be the abandonment of the comparatively new No. 2 auxiliary spring and the supplying of the town entirely from the old No. 1 spring. All the available water will thus he required for borough consumption, and the concession to the farmers will probably be discontinued. The No. 2 spring has been in uso for about a year, having been constructed !n such a manner that it could be used merely for a supplementary spring, being brought into operation at peak periods by the turning of n valve. The works cost the Cambrldgs Borough Council a considerable sum and when opened brought to realisation a comprehensive scheme first santioned by the ratepayers in 1921. Prior to il« completion the borough supply was always laxed In the summer. The matter was discussed by tho Cambridge Borough Council and the solicitor in committee last week when tho Mayor. Mr C. 11. Priestley, move! the following notice of motion, which will be brought before the council at its next meeting: " That, owing to the excessive costs attendant upon the proposal to obtain a supplementary supply of water from the No. 2 .Maungatautarl Spring on tho land owned and occupied by Mr J. .V Wallace, the scheme he abandoned, and that in order to reduce the drawoff from No. I spring certain farm consumers he given notice of the council’s intention to discontinue their supplies."
