FASTEST TIME
THE ATLANTIC FLIGHTS. CROBBING BY THE OALEDONIA. OVER 170 MILES AN HOUR. (Official wireless.) (Received Aug. 23, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Augr 22. The Empire flying-boat Caledonia, In her survey flight of the proposed Atlantic commercial air route, made the fastest crossing fnom west to east, covering the journey in 11 hours 33 minutes. The previous fastest west-to-east crossing in the present series of survey flights was accomplished by the Imperial Airways’ flying-boat Cambria, her time being 11 hours 57 minutes. The Caledonia averaged during the flight from Botwood to Foynes a speed of Just over 170 miles an hour. She was in wireless touch with the shore station and ships during the whole of her flight. At one time she ascended to a height of approximately 16,000 feet in order to rise above a bank of clouds. The meteorological forecast of conditions over the Atlantic, as prepared beforehand, again proved extremely accurate.
