A message from Fairbanks, Alaska, states that the well-known American airman, Mr James Mattern, took oft [from there to search for the lost Russian fliers after waiting flve days for Ithe weather to clear up. I A telegram from Barrow, Alaska, 'says the belief is hardening that the seven missing men will not be found alive if they endeavoured to land on the Ice-pack. This is based on Mr Mattern’s report that the lee Is so rough that landing would bo Impossible. ) The troubles of the would-be rescuers have been increased by the forcing down of a refuelling aeroplane near Fairbanks. It landed on its nose on flat land surrounded by water, a is believed that the crew were not hurt and will bo rescued. The other aeroplanes are still on ♦he ground owing to cloud and fog but are ready to take' off immediately the weather clears. Sir Hubert Wilkins arrived at the mouth of Coppermine River, Edmonton. after a delay due to low clouds. In which Ice formed on the wings of his machine. He is establishing a base and shortly will take off for a reconnaissance Might.
