It is reported that Trans-Canada Airlines and Pan-American Airwaxs will shortly discuss the establishment of an air service' to link America and Canada with Australia and New Zealand by way of the Arctic. The proposed route would be from Edmonton to Fairbanks, Alaska, and thence by way of Japan and China to Australia and New Zealand. It is stated that this would eliminate llying over the ocean in stages greater than 1200 miles. An arrangement already exists by which Australian and American Airways on the San Francisco-Hongkong service in conjunction with the Aus-tralia-Singapore and Penang-Hong-kong services. Air mails which close in Melbourne on Tuesday each week reach San Francisco a fortnight later. Mails from the American continent reach Melbourne every Friday. The postal rate from Australia to Canada is 4s 7d for the first half ounce; to the United States, -is 8d; and to Argentina, 10s. “SECRET EYE” PRODUCED. BRITISH INVENTOR S CLAIM. LONDON, August 19. A “secret eye” which detects aircraft above clouds or llying at night through l'og lias been produced by a British inventor, who claims that it will prevent collisions at sea. He uses wave-lengths of light longer than infra-red and shorter than radio The approach of objects miles distant is indicated, also their direction. The secret of the apparatus is a set of special valves supplied from three high tensiou and two low tension batteries. ATLANTIC FLIGHTS. VALUABLE EXPERIMENTAL TESTS. THE EMPIRE FLYING-BOATS. Imperial Airways state that technical I data of extreme value is being obtained from the Atlantic survey flights : by the Empire flying-boats Caledonia i and Cambria. The present scries of tests, in which ! no commercial loads are being carried, j will be followed bv a second series in which mails will be carried across the Atlantic.
