'Chinese claim that they have advanced in the Yangtse-poo district north-east of the city. They also claim to have pressed back the Japanese in a section of Chapei, which they have held. Japanese bombers several times pounded the Chinese lines at 'Chapei and Kiangwan, diving daringly low before releasing their bombs. In connection with the Shanghai situation, it, is understood the British view of the essentials for any scheme for 1 lie Isolation of the International Settlement from the theatre of SinoJapanese hostilities are:— i I ) A mutually-agreed exclusion of Japanese and Chinese military and naval forces from tlie zone including and surrounding Shanghai.
