IN NEW YORK SQUARE. WOMAN'S STRANGE ACT. 300 BIRDS DESTROYED. llnllea Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Capyrlgat NEW YORK, August 10. The gruesome killing of over 300 pigeons was perpetrated in the peaceful Verdi Square, in tile heart of Manhattan, by an elderly woman. Accompanied by a small dog, she entered the square during the morning and scattered poisoned seed, after which she hurried away. The pigeons, distressed within a few minutes of eating the seed, desperately flew to the puddles in search of water, and presently began to die In mid-flight. Their bodies hurtled to the earth and were dashed on to the grass plots. Some fell on to the statue of the composer Verdi, after whom the square is named. It was found that tiie seed had been impregnated with a poison calculated to dry the moisture quickly from tiie bodies of the birds, after which drinking was immediately fatal. Protests are pouring in. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and also the police are seeking the poisoner.
