CLERICAL “BLACK SHEEP.”
WEEDING-OUT PROCESS. (From a Correspondent.) LONDON, June 30. “We want a way to be found for bringing to book the few blaok sheep in the flock. There is no doubt that in some cases incumbents are negligent, and the clergy as a whole do not want to be tarred with the same brush." In these words the Bishop of Salisbury supported the motion in the Church Assembly, at Westminster yesterday, urging final approval for the Inoumbents (Misbehaviour and Negligence) Measure. The Rev. H. G. Crabtree, of St. Albans, opposing, said the weakness of the measure was that indecency was not properly defined. The measure provided that the expression misbehaviour In reference to an Incumbent shall Include—(l) Malloe or hatred in aot or word. (2) The use of language in speech or writing which is unseemly for a clerk In holy orders. (8) Bankruptcy in circumstances causing grave social scandal. The debate was adjourned.
