NEGLIGENT DRIVING.

FOUR PERSONS INJURED. YOUNG MAN CONVICTED. (Times Representative.) MORRINSVILLE, Wednesday. Arising out of an a'coident In Studholme Street, Morrinsville, on June 27, Albert John Martin was oharged before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Morrinsville Magistrate’s Court to-day with negligent driving. Martin was also oharged with driving an unlighted motor-car. Defendant entered pleas of guilty on both charges. Constable J. MoMullin stated that defendant had bought a car in Auckland two weeks prior to the accident and had not driven previous to that. The firm which had sold him the car had taught him to drive and he had driven only twice prior lo the accident. During the afternoon of June .27 defendant had experienced trouble when his car had left the road on the Mata maia-Morrinsvi lie highway, and had crashed through a gate. In the evening Martin had experienced trouble with his lights but had not been able to get them fixed. While he was going along Studholme Street his lights had failed altogether. Four young people had been walking homo from church. It was dark at the time and, the footpath being In a rough state, they were walking on the side of the road. One car approached them and just after It had passed they were struck from behind by defendant's car. The pedestrians had been Injured and the car had carried on for some distance before it had stopped. One of the girls had been .carried a considerable distance on the front of the vehicle. Martin had not had any liquor but had driven the car without lights. Martin stated that he was testing his lights when the accident occurred. After the accident his lights had been found to be in good working order ‘and he had been allowed to drive the car home. His Worship stated that it appeared that defendant had been allowed to obtain his license too easily. On the first charge he was fined £2, with costs, and on the second £1 with costs. Martin’s driving license was cancelled until such time as he could pass a driving test in Morrinsville.
