ARBOR DAY.
CHILDREN PLANT TREEB* CEREMONIES AT THE SCHOOLS. Arbor Day was observed throughout the Dominion to-day, and the children of Hamilton took pride in planting native and other trees during special ceremonies arranged at the various schools this morning. At the Hamilton West School the ceremony opened at 11 o'clock with the singing of the National Anthem, after which the headmaster of the school, Mr L. J. Mark, addressed the pupils on the value of the trees and the forests of New Zealand. An essay “Trees and Forest Protection” was read to the school by a Standard VI. pupil who had written it. Later songs, with themes concerning trees, were sung by the gathering. Mr A. H. Cheeseman, a member of the school committee, also addressed the pupils. At the outset of the tree-planting ceremony two coronation oaks were set in commemoration of the coronaton of King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth. Other trees planted included native specimens and also oaks. Children of the school volunteered to care for the saplings for twelve months. Similar ceremonies were held at other primary schools In Hamilton today.
