PACIFIC COAST TIMBER.
INCREASED FREIQHTB. SHIPPERS WITHHOLD DELIVERY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. ‘‘Freights are two and a-half times greater than a year ago, while f.o.b. | prices have advanced from 25 to 30 ! per cent,” said Mr R. T. Vanderfteld, managing director of a leading timber firm-, in Sydney, who is travelling to Vancouver by the Aorangi to investigate the problems connected with the carriage of timber from the Pacific Coast of America to Australia. ‘‘Some shippers have not stood up to their contracts," he said, “and failure to deliver Is a serious matter. One of the reasons for high freights is the use of tramp steamers for the carriage of scrap metal from America to Japan. Last year shipments exceeded 1,000,000 tons.” Mr Vanderfield added that two years ago Britain bought scarcely a foot of timber from British Columbia, but last year she purchased 1,000,000,000 feet in 250 cargoes.
