“ONE PAIR OF SHOES.”
MAINTENANCE DEFAULTER. TERM OF IMPRISONMENT. “ All I’ve got Is one pair of shoes,” said Leo. R. Cleaver in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning when Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., Imposed on him a sentence of 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour, to be released on the payment of £lO as a deposit to comply with a maintenance order amounting to £SO. -Cleaver admitted being in arrears with the maintenance. “ No doubt they will find you a pair of shoes in prison,” said the magistrate In reply to the defendant’s ejaculation. Cleaver, who Is a railway employee, and single, -stated that he was drawing wages which amounted To £4 one week and £4 5s the next. Out of these amounts he was paying 30s a week for board and had borrowed £2O to meet court expenses, and owing to these expenses he was unable to pay the £lO 15s owing. He asked that the order be reduced by ss. This was refused.
