STATE HOUSING SCHEME. TENDERS FOR 1400 HOMES. (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Monday. Satisfaction with the progress*being made by the State housing scheme was expressed by Mr J. A. Lee, undersecretary of Housing, In an interview yesterday. Since the Inception of the scheme last year, tenders have been called for the erection -of more than 1400 houses, he said. In the majority of cases tenders had been let and actual building operations «*were proceeding. Schemes were rapidly being developed to serve other districts. ‘‘The Housing Construction Department has not had its first birthday yet,” Mr Lee said, “and I think we are entitled to feel some satisfaction with the progress which we have made. Building schemes are actually under way or else satisfactory tenders havo been received and we -are ready to start operations at Lower Hutt, Miramar and Johnsonvllle in Wellington, at Orakel and Otahuhu In Auckland, and at Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill, Oamaru, Thames, Whakatane, New Plymouth, M-asterton, Wanganui, Palmerston North and Westport. Mr Lee said. owing to the difficulty of negotiating satisfactory purchases of land the schemes in some towns are slower In starting. Altogether, land for housing has been purchased in 40 different towns.
