FINE BOWLING

MATCH WITH ESSEX. HOME TEAM SCORES 266. WILCOX MAKES 116 HUNS. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel Copyright LONDON, Aug:. 7. The New Zealand cricketers commenced a match to-day against Essex on the Chelmsford ground. The weather was fine and the wicket easy. Essex won the toss and batted first, the New Zealand bowlers and fieldsmen having a trying time in sweltering heat. The county scored 256 and at stumps New Zealand had replied with .101 for one wicket. Cowie made a reappearance in the New Zealand team. He bowled for long periods without apparent distress. His physical fitness is evidently unimpaired as a result of his recent enforced idleness. The Essex team made a fine start, the second century being raised with only one wicket down. Page dissolved a productive partnership snd then Cowie and Dunning, using the second new ball, dismissed the next four batsmen quickly. Five wickets fell for 20 runs, including that of M. Nicholls, who was -a member of A. H. H. Gilligan’s team which toured New Zealand in the 1929-30 season. Fine Spell of Bowling. Dunning was responsible for a fine spell of bowling after the tea adjournment. He took three wickets for three runs, including two with successive deliveries. The Essex innings, which was one which promised a very high score, finished abruptly for quite a moderate total. The excellence of the wicket made all the more praiseworthy the effectiveness of Cowie and Dunntng. New Zealand batted for only an hour. Vivian gave a remarkable display of hitting, securing eight fours, two sixes and only four singles. His first fifty was made in half an hour. Both Vivian’s hits for six saw the ball go clean out of the ground. Bright Batting. A orowd of 5000 was warmly appreciative of the bright batting. Hadlee batted steadily, but he seemed slow in comparison with Vivian. De'talls of the scores are as follows : ESSEX
