In perfect weather, New Zealand was defeated by the New South Wales hockey team by 3 goals to 1 at the Sydney Sports Ground yesterday. This was the first Australian victory over a Dominion hockey side for 14 years. New Zealand oommenced at a terrific pace, the crowded forwards rushing the ball into the New South Wales circle, but polished stlckwork was absent. Duflleld opened New Zealand’s score with a flick-shot within ten minutes. New South Wales equalised within five minutes. Bates netting from a scrimmage in front of the goal-mouth. Hurrell increased New South Wales’ soore from a fine wing run. Smillie, the New Zealand custodian, stopped the ball, but failed to clear and it trickled slowly into the net.
