A bombardment lasting an hour killed a number of people, Including three women, In tho oentre of the olty. Buildings were extensively damaged. Tram drivers abandoned their cars for the first time during the bombardment. ATTACKS ON STEAMERS. BOMBED FOR AN HOUR. CAPTAIN SERIOUSLY INJURED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received August 7, il a.m.) ALGIERS, August 6. The steamer British Corporal, which arrived to-day, reports that three monoplanes bombed her for an hour. There were no casualties and the vessel was only slightly damaged. When the crew attempted to take to the boats the planes swoope'd down and machine-gunned them, forcing them to shelter. It is reported that planes also bombed the Italian steamer Mongioia when she was aiding the British Corporal, seriously wounding the master, Captain Verrito. ”8.0.8.” Sent Out. The British Corporal was homeward bound, laden with benzine, when she was attacked. The first news of the (bombing came from Marseilles, when it was reported that tho vessel had sent out an "5.0.5.” imploring assistance. The Admiralty stated later, however, that the British Corporal had cancelled the "5.0.5.” and was going to Algiers.

Senor Amrques Demagas presented his credentials to Herr Hitler as General Franco’s Ambassador to Germany. Herr Hitler declared: "It is the wish of myself and Germany that General Franco’s army will suoceed in securing peace in Spain and averting the danger which menaces Europe. " I also wish Spanish-German trade to be promoted as far as possible. Senor Demagas declared that Nationalist Spain was united with Germany in a common hatred of Communism, and was very grateful for Germany’s help and friendship. He added that many Nazi principles will be applied to Spain.
A THEATRICAL INCIDENT.

The Bordeaux correspondent of the Dally Telegraph says when French officials approached the Spanish Government steamer Arnomendi to serve a writ of attachment, Issued at the Instance of the Bank of Bilbao, the ■crew refused to allow them aboard, and placed the Republican flag on the gangway. The flag was eventually removed in a theatrical manner, hut In accordance with law, by a white-gloved gendarmerie officer, who saluted and presented the point of his sword to tl}e offending flag. Meanwhile the crew sang ‘‘The Internationale” and "The Red Flag.” These formalities completed, French artificers removed an essential piece of machinery, in order to prevent the ship sailing.
