Vanderbilt, won the America’s Cup with four successive victories over IVIr T. O. M. Sopwlth’s Endeavour 11. Despite crossing the starting line ahead of tlmo and being compelled to cross again, the Endeavour 11. made the best race of the series. The Hanger assumed a 200 yards’ lead before the Endeavour 11. could rectify the error. The American boat Increased its lead to three-quarters of a mile before the first turning, but the Endeavour 11. made up 30 seconds on the second leg, In which it outraced the Ranger. It seemed to be overhauling the American on the third leg In a 15-mile south-west wind, but the Ranger was too far ahead, finishing a quarter of a mile in the lead, and establishing a new record for the rectangular course. RANGER THE FASTER BOAT. MR SOPWITH HAS NO HOPE. TRIBUTES BY CRITICS. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. NEW YORK, August 5. The British skipper, Mr T. 0. M. Sopwith, after the race tacitly acknowledged that he had abandoned hope, remarking that the Ranger was the faster boat. “ All the Endeavour can do to-morrow,” be added, “ is to try to catch her.” Critics pay tributes to Mr Sopwith for his handling of the Endeavour, which they considered could not have been excelled even by Mr Vanderbilt. However, they think the Ranger is invincible. One press commentator sums up his views thus: “ The Endeavour probably is the fastest racing sloop ever built—with, the exception of the Ranger.” A Record Broken. The Ranger won by 500 yards, and 4m 27s on time. Her corrected time for the course w%s 3h 54m 30s. On the windward leg her time was 2h 3m 555, thus breaking the Rainbow’s record by 30s.
