EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS.
AMERICAN TOWN ROCKED. PEOPLE RUSH INTO STREETS. MUCH DAMAGE REPORTED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright SAN FRANCISCO, August 5. Lives were in danger and thousands of pounds’ worth of damage was caused when earthquake shocks rocked the town of Fairbanks, Alaska. The shocks began a little after 7 a.m., and continued intermittently throughout the day. They were felt over an area stretching for several miles on all sides of Fairbanks, which is the centre of Government activities in central Alaska. Fairbanks was just recovering from a disastrous flood, which submerged parts of the town for several weeks. The earthquake was surprising to old residents because Fairbanks is not in the recognised Alaskan earthquake zone, and the shocks sent hundreds of terrified people into the streets. Fairbanks has a population of a little more than 2000.
