HERO HONOURED
MINER’S GALLANT ACT.
ROYAL RECOGNITION. (Official Wireless.) (Received August 6, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, August 4. The King has awarded the Edward Medal for gallantry to Mr L. M. Bangley, who was employed in one of the gold mines at Kakamaga, in Kenya, for efforts made to save the life of a native worker after an explosion in the mine in January, 1936. Mr Bangley was firing the second round of nine hole's when one hole exploded prematurely,' and he was blown some distance away. His native assistant was struck by a rock and fell with his face in the water. Mr Bangley returned in the darkness, found the native, and carried him to safety. The injured man was taken to the surface but he died of his injuries.
