PROMINENT FRIESIANS TOTARA PARK STUD. . The Plrl Land Company’s "Totara Park” pedigree Friesian herd of 600 animals at Orini, Taupiri, is rightly considered to be the outstanding Friesian herd in the Southern Hemisphere. The wonderful development of this herd in breed, in type, and In high production of milk and butterfat is undoubtedly due to the wise selection of foundation cows and herd sires, and to the sound lines upon which the breeding programme has been conducted through the years. During the past ten years members of this herd have achieved signal success in the Derby and Class Medal contests with 23 places (including 4 Firsts and 5 Seconds) in the first named, and gaining 21 Gold Medals for Class Leaderships. ‘‘Totara Park” Friesians have 24 times produced over lOOlbs fat in a month, a figure unequalled by any other herd in the Dominion. "Totara Park" Friesians are a splendid example of how it la possible to breed heavy producers and outstanding show types from the same blood lines. In the past few years the stud has* bred and exhibited more prize winners and champions at the leading shows than any other establishment in the Dominion. The Plri Land Company have now won six Royal Championships and five North Island Championships, while they are the only stud yet to breed both a twice Royal Champion Bull (Totara Colantha Cavalier), and a twice Royal Champion Cow (Totara Sylvia Trixy). The latter cow, with her yield of 8311bs. fat, is also the highest record Friesian cow yet to win a Royal Championship. In 1936 "Totara Park” again featured prominently in the Got*ernment C.O.R. lists, securing four class leaders, while heifers bred in this stud secured third and fourth prizes In the New Zealand Friesian Association’s fourteenth Derby competition. Over 160 females of the "Totara Park” herd have been semiofficially tested and the test teams’ average for the last five seasons is 6571 b fat at average of 3 years 136 days. At Pirl Land Company's 1936 annual sale the demand for bulls was so great that record prices were obtained for the whole offering. This shows the high opinion held by other breeders and their keen desire to head their pedigree herds with a "Totara Park" bull.
