FAT STOCK SALES. HI«H PRICES FOR BEEF. SHEEP IN SHORT SUPPLY. AUCKLAND, Thursday. Some of the finest ox toeef offered at Westfield for a long time realised high prices at the fat stoolc sales yesterday. As a result values were quoted firmer by Is per 1001 b back to 345, from which level the market receded in March. At the corresponding sale a y*&r ago values ranged to 3is. Good* quality oalves were firm, and sheep tended to Improve. Porkers were inclined to be easier. Altogether the ox sale was unusually brisk, general Improvements of as much as 15s a head being recorded. Cows were priced to £ll. Ryland wethers, whioh equalled the high figure of 44s a head obtained last week, before which such a price had not been realised for two years. No marked improvement was experienced with ewes, whioh made to 345, slightly under the top price of a week ago. There was consistent quality in lambs, the primest sorts bringing to 32s 3d, as against a range of 34s 6d at the former sale. Heavy oalves were at a premium. Porkers were sold to £3 5s and dropped id per lb in the average to between 6id and 6£d. Baconers remained fully firm. The average was unohanged to 7d per lb. A Comparison. Ralph’s estate, of Mahuta, the average price for 21 being £ls 10s 84. Motion Brothers, of Pokeno, received to £l2 2s 6d. Cows and heifers yarded by Mr J. Wyllie, of Papatoetoe, sold to £ll, an 4 an offering from Mr H. Windsor, of Matangi, brought to £lO 10s. Lines from Mr J. A. Hill, of Ohinewai, made to £9 12s 6d. Mr W. R. Wright, of Matangi, sold cows to £9 2s 6d. Dal get y and Co. There was an offering of 174 head, comprising 16 steers and 158 cows and heifers against 113 head last week, at the weekly Westfield fat stook market held by Messrs Dalgety and Company yesterday. The quality was first class and selling under a good demand they report a rise of one shilling per lOOlbs for ox beef, while cow and heifer beef sold at rates fully equal to those of last week. Extra choice ox sold to 34s per i001b; clioioe and prime, 81s to 365; just killable, 27s to 80s; prime young cow' and heifer beef, 27s to 295; ordinary cow beef, 18s to 245. An average entry of lambs sold under good competition, and realised full late rates. Our yarding of calves was less than an average one. The sale opened with competition a little slack, ■ but improved later, values ruling on about a par with last week’s rates. There was an average yarding of pigs. The demand for all prime baconers remained firm, with values at fully last week’s rates. Porkers were not in such strong request, and sold at slightly lower prices. Good values again were received at the fortnightly sale of skins and hides. Brisk inquiry from both tanners and exporters resulted in values for both , hides and sheepskins being lifted fur- : ther.
