SPRINGBOKS’ TOUR. MANAWATU EASILY BEATEN. SIX FINE TRIES SCORED. (By Telegraph.—Special to Timer) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Scoring six tries, four of which Brand converted, the touring Springboks’ gave a taste of their capabilities to-day when they easily defeated J Manawatu by 39 points to 3. The ground was holding following heavy rain but conditions were fine and the visitors played sparkling football to beat Manawatu by speed and combination. Brand the Springbok fullback played a magnificent game and besides converting four tries, he kicked three penalty goals and brilliantly potted a goal from the halfway line. He played a sound all round game his fielding and kicking, particularly in the first spell, when Manawatu were always on the attack, were very accurate and he often saved his side with brilliant solo efforts. Manawatu, with the assistance of the wind, had the early advantage by quick breaking and long kicking, but the Springboks opened the scoring when Brand kicked a penalty goal, wide out and against the wind. This was after nearly half an hour’s )9lay and for the rest of the first speirthe visitors had the territorial advantage, but could penetrate the defence only once when Craven opened a gap for Lyster to shoot through under the posts. Brand converted, this making the half-time score:— South Africa r ,„., 8 Manawatq 0 Effective Changeover. The visiting team had been changed, Craven replacing Hofmeyr at centre and Strachan playing instead of van Reenan In the forwards. Lochner, the half, was very scratchy in this position, being slow to get the ball away and Just before the end of the first half Craven and he changed places. With Harris at fly-half, this gave the Springboks the snappy combination close to the scrum that was so effective in Auckland. Taking more advantage of a generous supply of the ball, Craven in the second half sent his backs away i smartly time and time again, and with I better combination In the early stages jof the movements. The open football ; tactics were very successful, five tries I being scored in the second half. it .was not four minutes after the re- ! sumption before the Springboks had scored again, Lochner kicking to the corner when he received and Lyster racing over wide out. Brand missed the kick. Shortly after, another centring kick by Bester saw Lochner score near the posts and Brand converted. Manawatu *s Try. A great break down the centre of the field by Edlln, the home halfback saw Newman score Manawatu’s only try and from then on the visitors piled up points in a workmanlike manner. Brand collected the next points with a fine penalty goal. Throwing the ball about from every angle, they overran Manawatu, Watt, Bastard and Louw scoring, Brand converting the three tries, while he also potted a brilliant goal making the final score: Springboks Manawatu 3 This was the Spring-bolts- fourth and most Impressive win In the four matches they have so far played In New Zealand.
