TRANSFORMATION SCENE.
H. 6k J. OOURT LIMITED. As a transformation scene that has to be seen to be believed, the spacious and airy new tea-room at H. and J. ■Court Ltd., with its marvellously artlstto and attractive decorative scheme of soft brown and pale gold, Is a modern and very lovely example. Viewed from the threshold the two oentral pillars, made with small oblong mirrors which are most original and scintillate In a fascinating manner, oatoh the eye, and the southwest corner of the room, which is taken up entirely by huge windows, presents a charming outlook. An attractive flooring in soft browns gives way to deep wall borders of walnut, banded in chromium, the higher part of the walls being in pale gold. Graceful horizontal lines have been aimed at throughout, and even the lighting, which Is modern and very simple, the shades being also of
pale gold, carries out this principle. The overhead lights are in clusters of three and single lights are round the walls, where ingenious use has been made of lovely mirrors, and the gold witchbowls, golden shaded flowers, toning linen and soft brown draped curtains again carry out the warm colour tonlngs. The most modern heaters with outside vents, which ensure a complete lack of fumes, are a final touch which add very greatly to the comfort of the room. A Dream Come True. The kitchens, behind the silent walnut swinging doors, considered from the housewife’s point of view, are Indeed a dream come true. The three bywords seem to be, cleanliness,
celerity, and saving of labour, and these principles are carried from the sinks and draining-boards of stainless steel, which boast not a single join or crack, to the terazzo work benches which need only a rub over with a cloth to render them spotless, in the boundless supply or boiling water, and tlie huge stoves with their eight large ovens. All the latest equipment which aims at the least possible handling, is there from waffle irons to sheers, cake mixers, potato peelers, freezers, and to novel metal tlpur and sugar bins on wheels. The storeroom and vegetable store, are separate, there is a capacious linen cupboard, and cupboards in plenty all with fittings of chromium, and made to prevent dust accumulating by having no ledges or cracks, a separate tea set-very with constantly warmed teapots, and a continual supply of boiling water. A small heater which supplies only water for washing-up will burn anything with the exception of tins, and boasts a hotplate where coffee is kept, healed, and a giant graded cupboard has sliding glass floors which enable Ihe food to bo kept moist and dust-free while awaiting disposal. The huge refrigerator (Continued In previous column.)
