FANCY DRESS BALL.

WAITERIMU SCHOOL FUNCTION. A children’s fancy dress ball, arranged by the teachers of the Waiterlmu School, was held In the local hall recently. Willing helpers had decorated the hall with red and white streamers, and masses of balloons, making a gay background for the bright and varied costumes of the children. The balloons were taken down and distributed at the close of the evening. Early in the evening the children began a varied programme of dances, commencing with the grand march and including several folk dances, a dainty minuet in powder and patch costumes, the veleta, the military twostep and other ballroom dances. The dances were given with a spirit that was very entertaining to the onlookThe teachers, Misses Hoyle and Court, are to be congratulated on the success of their efforts in training the children, and the effectiveness of the costumes, many of which they had designed. During the evening opportunity was taken by the local residents to make a presentation to Mr and Mrs S. W. lies, who are leaving the district. Mr A. F. T. Ansley said he had known Mr lies for many years and during all that, time be had been foremost in assisting every movement for the progress of the district. The Farmers’ Union, golfing, tennis and the Dramatic Society ail owed much to his untiring zeal—always seconded by Mrs lies. On behalf of the residents of I lie districts be wished them good luck and prosperity in their future home, and presented Mr lies with a chromiupi smoker’s companion, and to Mrs lies a pink and silver-mounted toilet set.
