FARMERS’ GOODWILL.
OPEN LAND TO HUNTING. WAIKATO MASTER’S THANKS. (Special Reporter). CAMBRIDGE, Saturday. In return for the much appreciated goodwill of the farmers who, by throwing their properties open, have made hunting possible, the Waikato Hunt entertained a large gathering of landowners in the Cambridge district at a hunt breakfast held in the Leamington Hall to-day. After the breakfast the hounds were thrown off over the excellent hunting district at Pukerimu. There was a large following, including several race horses qualifying. A large crowd followed in cars At the conclusion of the breakfast, the Master of the Hunt, Mr Wynn Brown, expressed the appreciation of the club for the goodwill of the farming community in the Waikato. Hunting depended on the use of the farmers’ properties and with so many willing supporters the Waikato Hunt was indeed fortunate. The master considered that sporting had contributed largely toward making the British nation what it is and the cooperation of those unable to take active part in hunting was a true sporting instinct.
Hunting was the national sport of England and was rising in popularity in the Dominion. It was a big sacrifice for the smallholders to open their farms when the pastures were being spelled for summer growth. The Hunt did not like hunting the same properties to often during the one season. In this respect the Waikato Hiunt was fortunate for so many farmers in the district were willing to allow the hounds over their property that different districts could be worked.
In conclusion Mr Brown said he would like to see more of the farmers taking an active part in hunting. He was pleased to sec the younger generation maintaining the old sport. To those farmers who could not hunt, the Master extended an invitation to follow in cars at any time, lie then called for cheers for the farmers.
