A MISTAKE
SIZE OF BATTLESHIPS. BRITISH ADMIRAL’S SURPRISE. A RACE AMONGST POWERS. (Official Wireless.) (Received August 2, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, August 1. The size of battleships was discussed by Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond at the Liberal Summer School at Cambridge. He referred to the tendency on the part of nations arming beyond their financial limits to try to make up their want of numbers by an increase in the size of ships. Throughout history this had invariably resulted in another Power building similar or bigger battleships in reply. He expressed surprise that nations with military ability, knowledge and experience should repeat the mistake oi this attempt, but he thought the Indications were that it would be done, and he prophesied that other nations, Including Britain, would be constrained to follow the example's in order to preserve their position.
