SEA STORIES.
A Splendid Collection. There always will be people who love a good story of the sea, and It Is to be hoped that there always will be men with the detailed knowledge necessary to write them. Probably there is no sphere where the amateur can more easily make mistakes. Among the moderns who write sea stories that have the true tang is “Shalimar,” the pen name for P. G. Hendry, and the publishing house of William Blackwood and Sons, Ltd., has Just issued an omnibus volume of his best stories. It is entitled “Down to the Sea.” The author served his apprenticeship in square-rigged sailing ships, faring round the Horn in the ’nineties, and trading out of Greenock. Then oame years of service under sail, followed by commands on the Atlantic run, Journeys to China Seas and to many of the strange places of the earth. And in this volume he has drawn on his long experience, in days of peace and of war, writing in the raoy style os characteristic of seamen and with a fine sense of the dramatic. The Scotsman oalled him “a literary artist as well as a wayfarer,” and that is true. For those who love a tale of the sea—and they are many—this volume containing the best work of probably the finest writer of sea stories now living will be a joy, and with '6lB pages, a prolonged Joy. “Down to the Sea.” By “Shalimar.” Blaokwoods, Ltd.
