A MAD RACE
STRENGTH OF NAVIES. BRITAIN IN THE LEAD. EARNEST PLEA TO AMERICA. Unt'ed Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received July 30, 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 29. The Navy Department has published so-called summaries of the comparative naval data, in which Britain leads with 285 warships, totalling 1,216,398 tons; United States 325, totalling 1,083,330 tons; and Japan 200, totalling 745,604 tons. The new vessels being built in Britain are five battle-ships, five aircraft carriers, 21 light cruisers, 46 destroyers, and 19 -submarines. The United States figures are two battleships, three aircraft carriers, nine light cruisers, 55 destroyers, 17 submarines and one heavy cruiser. Japan's figures are aircraft carriers four light cruisers, 14 destroyers and three submarines. The New York Times, in a leader, says there Is no end to this mad pace, and earnestly pleads with the United States to refuse to be drawn in.
