HOSPITAL BOARD POST.
SHOULD BE ADVERTISED. DEPARTMENT’S SUGGESTION. CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday When the present secretary oi Hie North Canterbury Hospital Board, Mr W. S. Wharton, announced that he wished to retire at the end of this year the hoard decided lo appoint Mr W. A. Gudgeon, its accountant, to tlie position, reviewing the appointment after six months. At the time of the decision the hoard’s finance committee expressed the opinion that the position should he adverfsed. This morning Mr Wharton told Ihe board Hi at the Department of Health, on being notified of the manner of the appointment, had asked whether the board wished exemption from the regulation which provided that important positions on Hie hospital staff should l>e advertised. Mr Wharton wrote amplifying his first teller and asking for exemption lo cover the (Continued In previous column.)
In reply, the department recommended that the board should reconsider Ihe appointment and advertise the position in the regulation way. With a bodv responsible for such wide organisation as the North Canterbury Hospital Hoard, said Ihe letter, lit was absolutely necessary to he sure j that the best man available secured | the position. It was quite possible lliat Mr Gudgeon was the lies! man available, but the hoard could not be certain unless Ihe position was advertised. • II was decided to advertise the I position.
