FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY.
AFFECTED BY IMPORTS. MANUFACTURERS’ CONCERN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. 'Concern at the Increasing volume of footwear Imports, mainly from the United Kingdom, and the consequent effect on local industry, was voiced bv Mr Duckworth, of Christchurch, president, of the New Zealand Footwear Manufacturers’ Association at the annual meeting to-day. Mr Duckworth also emphasised the difficulties the industry was facing through the operation of the Government’s Industrial legislation. He did not think any increase in imports could he expected from Australia, where manufacturers were, now having to pay higher wages, lml it was alarming to note that imports from the United Kingdom had increased hv over 100 per rent during the five months from January to Mav compared with
