Buoyed by a partly-inflated lifejacket, the body of Pilot Officer Charles Houston was found floating near Point Cook. No trace of Pilot Officer Ernest Hyde was found. On July 27 an Air Force seaplane, containing two pilot officers, Ernest Hyde (20), and Charles Houston (13), was reported missing. The next day fishermen reported that they had seen the machine plunge into the sea.
