PREHISTORIC MAN
DISCOVERY in somerset. SUPPOSED HUMAN SKELETON. SEALED IN STALAGMITE. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, July 23. What are supposed to be human remains at least 12,000 years old, pre-dating the Magdelenian period have been discovered at Gough’s Caves, Cheddar, Somersetshire, in the form of a skeleton, which is being oleaned and re-assembled for examination by the Speleological Conference now sitting at Bristol. The skeleton is believed to be that of a man oft 3£in in height, who died, aged 23, and is now hermetically sealed between layers of stalagmite, whose accretions amount to only an inch in 1000 years. An abnormal feature is an immensely powerful lower Jaw suspended by a huge muscle and dependent on a boney protuberance on the side of the face. The cranial formation indicates high intelligence. Skilfully-shaped flint weapons, implements, and ilakings found near the skeleton, indicate that the cave' in which the bones were found was Aot only the man’s dwelling but also la workshop.
