80 M.P.H. ON HIGHWAY.
INSURANCE AGENT CONVICTED. INSPECTOR'S THREE MILE CHASE. After travelling at a high speed in the Te Aroha Borough and then dashing along the main Te Aroha-Hamilton road at 80 miles an hour with a traffic inspector in pursuit. Royal David Petersen, an insurance agent of Hamilton, Mr W. J. King) was charged with dangerous driving and appeared in the Magistrate’s Court. Hamilton, to-day before Mr S. L. Paterson and was convicted and fined £5 and costs. Mr J. Ainsworth, chief traffic inspector for the Auckland Transport District, conducting the case, said that on June 30 defendant was travelling at a high speed through Te Aroha and crossed the bridge at over 40 miles an hour. He was followed by a traffic inspector. On leaving the borough defendant increased his speed and did not heed the siren of the inspector’s car. * The chase continued for three miles when a maximum speed of 80 miles an hour was reached. On two occasions only when turning bends did defendant slacken to GO miles an hour. There, were two bends and live intersections on the road, which was in a populated area and was often frequented by stock. Defendant, when stopped by the inspector, said that his car window was up and he was unable to hear the siren. Mr King said that defendant admitted a maximum speed of 70 miles an hour. He was an experienced driver and was hurrying back to Hamilton to fulfil an engagement with his employer.
