PROGRESSING RAPIDLY.
DEVELOPMENT OF CHINA. ADDRESS BY REV. ,DR. TAYLOR. Though the general opinion seemed to be that China was a squalid and backward country, the country was actually progressing as rapidly In many ways as any European state, said the Rev. Dr. Arthur Taylor, in the course of an address at the Y.M.G.A., Hamilton, yesterday afternoon. Dr. Taylor, who Is the secretary for Scotland of the China Inland Mission, dealt generally with present day life and conditions In China. The country’s mineral wealth, he said, was greater than that of the entire British Empire and her actual wealth, was greater than America’s. The Chinese were at present beginning to develop their country's resources to the utmost and in the opinion of the speaker, China held the key to the future of the world. Whatever country oould gain China could snap its fingers at the rest of the world. ,If, however, some nation did not soon seize China it would be too late.
Japan, said Dr. Tayjor, in gaining Manchuria had won the richest portion of China, a territory which would repay the Japanese to the extent of 400 per cent, on what they had expended upon securing possession of It. Japan was moving swiftly to gain China as/a whole while Europe was embroil/fa in her own troubles. “TJfe Christian side of China’s life is so progressing rapidly," said Dr. Taylor. “The English missionaries have been doing great work, and now the Chinese are preaching and teaching Christianity among themselves.” In oonoluslon. Dr. Taylor said that he would be very pleased to see as much enthusiasm shown In English Christian circles as there was In China. In addition to his address at the Y.M.C.A. yesterday, Dr. Taylor also preached at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in the forenoon, and addressed a large meeting in the Theatre Royal in the evening. He will also lecture in the Methodist Church, London
Street, this evening.
