DAMAGES FOR WIDOW
JURY AWARDS £2927. CLAIM DEEMED EXTRAVAGANT. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. A damages claim for £4027 3s 6d was brought in the Supreme Court by Mtb Lorraine Eva Mary Manning, of Lower Hutt, in connection with the death of her husband, who was struck by a falling hatch beam when loading butter into the Durham on March 8. Mr Justice (Reed was on the bench. The widow has one child, born six weeks after her husband’s deaths She olaimed £27 3s 6d speoial and £4OOO general damages. Mr Justice Reed said he had no hesitation In describing the claim as extravagant. It was probably the most extravagant of its kind he had seen in the courts. The Jury awarde'd £2250 to the widow and £650 to the child and speoial damages brought the total to £2927 3s 6d.
