SUSTENANCE FRAUDS.
PROMPT FINE PAYMENTS. False names on waterfront. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday. When twelve men were fined amounts ranging from £1 10s to £36 each in the Police Court to-day for false sustenance statements, the magistrate, Mr F. H. Levien, said he did not think an excessive time should be allowed to pay such fines. “There have been many of these cases before the court,’’ he said. “ and costs are mounting up. It will mean the department will have to employ extra clerical assistance to complete the records. I consider two or three months ample time in which to pay these fines.” When one man said he had been asked to sign under another name before he could get work on the waterfront the magistrate asked the prosecuting officer if he had any evidence' of anyone being behind such system on the wharf or whether it was a matter of Individual efforts. The officer replied that when a check was made in March, when back pay was not claimed, the Department of Labour found that a number of men were working under other names on the waterfront to avoid declaring Inoome but he could not say that that was the result of aip- organisation.
