FAREWELL AT SPRINGDALE
OLD RESIDENTS HONOURED. The Springdale Hall was the scene of a large gathering when residents and friends assembled recently to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs D. Johnson and Mr and Mrs A. Hunger, wellknown residents of the district. The programme, which took the form of a concert and dance, opened with community singing led by Mesdames Wagstalf and Palllser, Mrs Qual trough being the accompanist. Other items were: Vocal solos, Mesdames J. Brown, 11. Wagstaff and E. Palllser; Mr A. North at the piano, and humorous items by Mr Knyvett. The chairman, Mr J. Nicholson, asked some of the old residents to escort the guests-of-honour forward. On behalf of the hall committee and tennis club he spoke of the association of the two families, who had taken a keen interest in both organisations, and on behalf of the residents of the district presented to Mr and Mrs Johnson two ilreside chairs and a beautiful chiming clock, and to Mr and Mrs Hunger, a silver tea service and chiming clock. Mr Palliser, president of the Farmers’ Union, made eulogistic reference to Mr Johnson as past-president and to Mr Hunger as secretary. Other speakers were Mr J. Keightley on liehalf of ttie Church, Mr 11. Wagstaff on behalf of the sports club and in- } door bowling club, and Mr T. Hitchman for the domain board. The speakers referred to the untiring efforts and the willing help of Messrs Johnson and Hunger, after which musical honours were accorded the guests of Hie even'll?. Mr Johnson returned thanks for the gifts to Mrs Johnson and himself. Mr Hunger also extended thanks for the kindness and the beautiful gifts. A very pleasant surprise was accorded by Mr Johnson to one of the oldest residents of the district, Mr T. Httchman, who has ably filled the position as secretary to the domain board and the hall committee for 2 1 years, and lias acted in an honorary capacity to many organisations of the district. A weil-tllled wallet, a note representing each year of service, was then presented to Mr H'lchman. Mrs Hitehman receiving a silver cake-dish. Mr Hitehman. in responding, expressed thanks for Hie gifts. Supper was served by the social committee, after which dancing was continued, Mr Knyvett officiating at the piano and extras being played bv Mrs Parker and Mr A. North. Mr G. Findlay had charge of the danceiloor.
