Early subscriptions to the King George Memorial Fund include 1000 guineas from Lord \aniefleld, another 1000 guineas from the Wakefield Com—pany and 500 guineas from the match manufacturing firm of Bryant and May. A speech broadcast by the Prime Minister, Mr Baldwin, to the nation and the Emplre on behalf of the fund was relayed throughout the United States.

Mr William Heines, a. film star of the silent screen, was severely beaten by a mob at his seaside home near Los Angeies on Saturday evening. The police who are investigating the case revealed to-day that according to Mr Hainvs he was with a companion when about 100 persons, including many women, suddenly attacked him, shouting that they were the ”White Legion.” This apparently is a Vigilante organisation, somewhat similar to the “ Black Legion" recently exposed at, Detroit. .\lr Ilaines, who has been operat—ing a modest decorating establishment since he left the movies, said he knew no reason 'for the attack, but obviously it was directed against him, as many of the mob called him by name.
