RECOMMENDATION T 0 MERCY A verdict of guilty with a strong rermnnnndaiion to mercy, in View of extenuating circumstances, \\'as returned ily the jury after a short, reiirmncnt. to conclude the trial Ola Maori tai'ni-hund, Mate Maihana Kingi, aged 23, in the Supreme Court at. Hamilton yesterday afternoon. The accused was indicted on a charge or the at—tempted rape or a woman at Patamoa on March '22. Mr Justice Fair presided. Mr H. ’l‘. Gillies conducted the prosecution and Mr J. F. Strung was assigned by His Honour to the detence. In acknowledging the recommendation, His Honour said that he did not wish to criticise the jury in suggesting for future guidance that any recommendations for clemency should be backed by the full weight of evidence. The prisoner was remanded for sen. tence until to-morrow.
