——+— ‘ l JUDGING AT LONDON. ll 1 _— i SOUTH ISLAND COMPETITION. 1 i Smithfield judges who examined the 1 450 lambs comprising the South Island entries for this year’s district lamb competition of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, state in ‘ their report to hand by air mail that 1] “the lambs representing the ten dis- h tricts constitute one of the finest col- ; l lections we have seen, and generally l, represent choice high-grade lambs em- i . irfiently suitable for the average but- I: c er.” The display was held on April 29 at l ‘ Smithfield. London, and attracted as I, usual a great deal of interest in the “ wholesale and retail meat trade. The I ‘ judges, appointed by the Imported!l Meat Trade Association, were Messrs ‘1 D. C. Messent, F. H. Dennison, and i, E. Fitter, and they spent a. great deal “ of time in making close comparisons ~ between the ten district entries, com- 1 ‘ prising 15 pens of three lambs each. :1 Dealing first‘with the district en- $1 tries for the South Island Challenge " Shield the judges state in their re-i port: “All the districts contained individual lambs of exceptional merit, but after very careful examination and consideration we decided that the shield for the best district exhibit as a whole must be awarded to Southland. with East Southland 2nd, North Otago 3rd., and Nelson 4th. Comments of Judges. The judges‘ comments on the winning districts were as follows: Southland (winner of Shield).— Very fine collection of choice lambs.' Exceedingly even and all beautifully shaped and full of meat. For size and an entire absence of waste an ideal 1 exhibit. Perfect butchers’ meat. ! . East Southland (2nd.).——This ex— ‘ hibit deserves high praise for the gen- 1 eral make and shape of the lamb, con- ‘ earning which there can be no ad- l verse criticism. North Otago (3rd.).—A splendid l run of choice lambs. For shape and ‘ make, fullness of meat and an entire I absence of waste this district received (I the judges” highest commendation. 5 Nelson (4th.).—A run of admirable *‘ lambs which were in the closest com- P petition with Norlh Otazo from every point of vie“: only fallingr short of 1‘ that district in the four currases i" which were lurkingr in tho ideal shupo '1 and make of tho majority of North \\ Otago. , . _ . 1' In tho competition inr the best in- \‘ dividual pens Mid-Canterbury wax u placed first.
