INCREASED SCALE.
RELIEF AND SUSTENANCE. NEW RATES ANNOUNCED. Details of the Government‘s plans to increase the Scheme 5 and susten—ance scales of relief. as from June i. were submitted to the Hamilton Borough Council last evening by the Labour Department. The new rates provide for weekly payments to men on No. 5 work, ranging from 245 for 12 hours 'work for single men. to £3 12s for 36 hours work for married men with seven or more children. S‘ustenance rates will range 'from 17s a week In the case of single men, to a maximum of £2 175 for married men. Provision is also made for the pay—ment by looal authorities of time rans—lng from is to 55 6d a day. It has been decided that where any State Department, local or public, authority grants to relief workers a ration of relief (either at the mini-mum Public \Vorks standard rate of 25 an hour..or at the award rate if this is higher). or not, more than four hours in Excess of the Scheme 5 allocation, the whole of the wages is in be exempt from wages tax. In the case of relief workers who are granted a ration of work of more than four hours in excess of the weekly alloca—tion, the total wages paid, including tho amount refundable from the Employment Promotion Fund, will be taxable. Advice was also received that the Scheme 5 ”over the fence” work would definitelyr cease on May 31. and all labour placed under this scheme is to be withdrawn at the end of this month.
