MR J. A. SAMPSON IRE-ELECTED SUCCESSFUL YEAR EXPERIENCED. At. the annual meeting of thc \Vai—ktito County Council yesterday Mr J. A. Sampson wus unanimously rcrclectecl chairman for the ensuing; year. In a briei‘ review of the year‘s activity the county clerk pointed out that generally it had proved more successi'ul than for several years past. Rate collections had increased and there had been at grcalcr demand for heavy traffic and‘drivcrs' licenses. The year had ended with u healthy credit. balance. Several major \\orks had been completed and \\'ithl. the year had been one of steady progress. Effect. of Labour Legislation. Concern was expressed h}- the chairman at the Government's present labour legislation which was going to affect the county considerably, in his Opinion. On the other hand things were dcflnitcly on tho. improve and apart. from anything drastic occurring through the Government‘s labour legislation.‘ the council could view the coming year with a very hopeful outlook. It, was the opinion of Mr R. G. Young that. as increased costs would be ap—parent throughout New Zealand the Counties! Association would have a strong case for compensation from the Government. It. was explained by the engineer, Mr A. A. \Voodwaird. that the new rates right. through, prm’iding things were equal, would entail an increase of £3157 Is. During the. slump the county had paid a higher scale. of wages main public works Employees received and the. engineer had always employed, as instructed. the best labour available. A vote of sympathy with the rela—lives of the late Mr Alan Bell was passed and the clerk instructed to con—vey to them appreciation of the deceased‘s tine public record. Requests Declined. Several requests by carriers for operating lomls in excess of the classi—fication of the roads they operate on was declined. councillors generally considering that while in one. case less. damage in county roads would be incurred as the result. of the utilisa—tion of a better type of vehicle, a dangerous precedent \\'ullld 1w created by devtalinc from the strict obser—vance of road classifications. _...—— MATAMATA COUNTY.
