I LONDOX, May ‘l2. . l’lcspntches from Jerusalem state that [tho situation created by the hostility ihctwren the Arabs and the Jews in ‘l’alestine is becoming worse. 1 Three British soldiers were wounded ‘in an (‘ncounter with Arab snipers. ‘Previnusly the Arabs had ambushed a crowded Jewish omnibus and three private motor—cars containing; prominent Jewish leaders in a narrow defile on the main Jerusalem-Jat‘fa road. Two passengers in the bus were wounded. A party of Cameron High—landers was rushed to the spot in lor—ries and met a fairly heavy fire from the snipers. Taking cover behind trees the soldiers retaliated and the snipers retreated. one beins captured. Troops now have taken over from the police the guardianship of vulnerable points. including the oil area and the Post (Itmce. Further reinforcements are on the way from Cairo. An Ultlmatum Issued. The Jerusalem correspondent of the Daily Mail reports that Arab lighter—meu at Jaffa have issued an ultima—tum to the District Commissioner threatening serious trouble unless the unloading of ships at ’l‘claviv ceases within 2.2 hours. 'i‘elaviv. where ‘there is a. large Jewish settlement. is being used as a temporary port owing to the strike at Jat'fa. The British destroyer Beagle has been sent to protect ships which are being unloaded. ' Communication between. Jerusalem and JaiTa has been severed, thus inter—rupting communication with Cairo. The inhabitants of an Arab Village near Acra have been collectively fined £2OO for starting fires in ilelds and attacking passing cars. An attempt was made to blow up a bridge near Jerusalem and the wires ot’ the Jerusalem broadcasting station were cut. Jews are continuing their evacuation of the old city 01’ Jerusalem, in which only 200 Jewish families new remain. Christians also are deserting the mixed quarters of the town. i
