i BELL CUP PLAY. , —— \ QUALIFYING ROUND REVIEWED. GOOD CARDS RETURNED. (By " Ni-bllck.") Conditions were ideal last Saturday afternoon when the qualifying round for the ‘Bell Cup and Consolation Handicap matches was played. This no doubt accounted to some extent for the good cards which were returned. Only one player with a net card over the scratch score succeeded in gaining a place in the first sixteen, while no score above '77 was good enough for the second sixteen. In fact one player with a card of '77 had to drop out. Last year '77 was good enough for the Bell Cup and 80 for the, Console.tion Handicap but it must be remembered that the scratch score was then '75, whereas it is now two strokes less and handicaps have been adjusted accordingly. It has not been easy for the handicapper to make his adjustments this seaSOn as the single bogey handicap for the Gilbey Cup was the only competition to be played since the change from autumn conditions. It is interesting to note that no player with a gross score of 90 or over qualified in the Bell Cup and in fact all but live had cards of 85 or better. The match play should be interesting as there are several players on single figures. Ferguson and Beilingham are the only two low markers in the Con—solation matcll——the former has been playing very consistently recently but putting weaknesses on Saturday spoiled what might have been an excellent card. Lucky Wltn Recovery Shots. The best gross cards were returned by Sutciii‘t‘e, Graham, and Harding—— all 78. The iirst named was in great form although he was lucky with some recovery shots after wild drives. He holed 'two long putts only, but required three at the lath and 13th. Graham played sound golf, an eight at the "Hit being his only bad lapse. Harding was also in good form and might have been at least three strokes better had he not slipped over the last four holes at which he ob—tained only one four. Riddeli, from a handicap or 11, led the field with a gross score of 30. and his card was lwalon only ivy tho Hil‘L‘i‘ seniors just mentioned.
