The Board of Trade index of industrial activity in the United Kingdom w : as 1.9 per cent, greater in the first quarter of 1936 than in the preceding quarter, and 8.9 per cfent. greater than in the first quarter of 1935. The numbers for the three periods were 123.1, 120.8 and 113.0 respectively.

The index numbers for the March quarter, both for the manufacturing industries and for all groups, together respresent the greatest volume of production since the inception of the index. The production in the iron and steel goods group constitutes a record and tlie production of textiles is the highest since the first quarter of 1928. The production of coal is the highest since the first quarter of 1930.
