SUBSIDY STOPPED.
ON WELFARE LEAGUE’B MEAT. DISTRIBUTION TO CEASE. The hon. secretary of the Waikato Social Welfare League has been advised by the Department of Labour that: “In view of the general increases in relief rates, the Department has decided to discontinue the payment of subsidies on the purchase of meat, distributed by the League as from the 31st instant. This means that the League will not continue the supply of meat as from the date mentioned In conveying the decision to the League, the secretary of the Department adds: “The Government is appreciative of the good work that has been carried out by your organisation in the distribution of meat to unemployed families, and while regretting the necessity for the withdrawal of the present subsidy, feels that the substantial increases recently announced in all relief rates will considerably improve the lot of those unfortunate persons w'ho have been obliged to seek unemployment relief.”
