SUMMER SHOW

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. MORE JUDGES APPOINTED. PIG PAVILION PROPOSAL. The consideration of correspondence was the main business at a meeting of the executive of tlie Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. In the absence of the president, Mr Neil Reid, Mr R. A. Hinton presided, while also present were: Messrs W. H. Miers, G. Jew, T. Martin, P. H. Clarkin, 11. Windsor, W. R. Franklin, G. Hinton, S. R. Hinton, H. Whewell, C. Bailey, F. Finlayson and W. L. Ranstead (secretary). A letter was received from the Northern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society asking the Waikato Association for nominations of lady judges, and for a complete list of judges for all sections. The recommendation was made that the association include in its schedule a wider range of classes, so as to permit maiden and novice horses to compete in tlie horse events. On the motion of the chairman, Messrs Roland Hinton and A. Sutherland were added to the list of light horse judges, and Mesdames T. L. Ranstead and D. Gorrie, and Dr. Grant were appointed judges of the ladies’ section. Tiie co-unoil also forwarded a ballot paper for the election of lour members to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of Messrs A. Best, D. S. Ross and Dr. G. Walker, and the death of Mr C. E. Goosman. Tlie matter was left in the hands of Mr W. H. Miers and the secretary. Mr G. Jew was appointed the association’s arbitrator in regard to an application from Mr C. 11. Slater for a renewal of the lease of the association’s section of 48 acres on the Mangawara road. Pig Caroase Photographs. The Waikato Pig Recording and Research Association wrote stating that at their last meeting a resolution was passed to the effect that tlie photographs submitted of the pigs sent Home from the last Summer Show did not show to advantage as compared with other meat carcases sent to England, and that the Show Association should make some endeavour to have a fixed weight range lor export pigs exhibited at the show. It had also been suggested that any further porker competitions should conform to the weight range of GOlb to 801 b dead weight, and prizes awarded on the iioof and on tiie hooks be confined to pigs killed between these weights. Mr Jew considered that the pig carcase photographs did show to advantage in comparison with the photographs of other carcases. The difficulty of making the awards on tlie hoof to conform to the suggested weight range was stressed, as the pigs in the special classes at the last show had shown a loss of from 25 to 45 per cent, when hung on the hooks. The matter was left in abeyance until the next meeting of the schedule committee. The recommen lation of Mr H. Windsor to the schedule committee that a class for yearling heifers in the fat lection be included In this year’s schedule was endorsed. A letter was received from the president, Mr Neil Reid, suggesting that, in view of his indisposition, the executive should accept his resignation. On the suggestion of the chairman it was resolved to grant Mr Reid three months’ leave of absence. A grounds committee was elected as follows: Messrs N. Reid, R. A. Hinton, P. 11. Clarkin, W. 11. Miers, T. Martin, H. J. Finlayson, G. Jew, and Roland Hinton. Pig Pavilion Needed. Tiie matter of constructing a new' roadway to the pig pavilion was referred to tlie grounds committee for action. The donation of a Shetland pony by Mr R. Chilcott, lo be awarded as a prize in a weight-guessing competition, was accepted with thanks. The urgency of a new’ pig pavilion was stressed, and it was resolved to canvass for donations. Mr W. 11. Miers expressed tlie opinion that the building should be erected immediately, instead of waiting for donations. On the motion of Mr Roland Hinton, the secretary was instructed to write to the secretary of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association for a sketch of the Auckland Association's pavilion in order that some estimate might be made of the cost of erection.
