CENSUS RETURNS

COUNTIES’ POPULATION. BIG INCREASES RECORDED. SOUTH AUCKLAND FIGURES. Substantial increases in the population of the Waikato, Waipa and Raglan Counties since the last tally was taken ten years ago are revealed in the latest census returns. A comparison of the county figures for 1936 and 1926 is shown in the following table, the 1926 returns toeing exclusive of Maoris:— 1936 1926 Waipa 12,371 9344 Waikato .... 12,123 8844 Raglan .... 9,495 5767 Further returns include the figures for the Leamington and Kihikihi town districts. In the case of Leamington a decline in population from 553 in 1926 to 543 is recorded, but at Kihikihi the population has increased from 293 to 322.
