NATIVE BIRDS.

WIDE VARIETY ON TARARUAS. CYCLONE DAMAGES BUSH. (By Telegraph.— Pryns Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Reporting on investigations made in the Tararua Range on the prevalence of native birds the ranger for the Wellington Acclimatisation Society : stated that native pigeons had increased in numbers. They were plentiful on both sides of the ranges and more kaka were seen and heard this year tha nfpr some time. No parakeets were seen but he reported a few still frequented the eastern side of the ranges about MastertonRifleman, wren, whitehead, grey warblers, pied tit and white eye were frequently seen and beautiful little fantails seemed to be everywhere. The tuis were very elusive birds and sometimes were not seen for long periods; then they suddenly appeared in dozens. Bell-birds were seen and heard in most places and were plentiful. The destruction of native bush by the cyclone in the North Island on February 2 was in some places terrific. It was certain no other visitation of that nature had happened for a great number of years. Looking down from very high country the impression was given that high explosives had been showered down, as the damage was in patches. In some places where large trees had sufficient root-hold to resist being uprooted they had been broken off perhaps 30 feet, from the ground.
